Beyond the Collection Claim

Short answers to questions that change how a facility, material or sustainability claim should be assessed.

Are ocean-recovered and ocean-bound plastics the same?

No. Ocean-recovered material has been collected from the marine environment. Ocean-bound describes material considered at risk of reaching it under a stated definition. Check the collection boundary. Start with source records.

Why is collection weight greater than recycled output?

Water, sediment, organics, metals, unsuitable polymers and processing losses can all reduce the final polymer output. Compare weights on a clearly stated basis. A dry output figure and a wet collection figure are not directly interchangeable.

Can every fishing net enter the same line?

No. Nets can contain different polyamides, polyethylene and mixed constructions, as well as coatings and fittings. Polymer identification and separation determine the route. An operator's success with one net type should not be extrapolated to all gear.

Does washing reverse marine weathering?

No. Washing can remove selected surface contaminants, but it does not reverse molecular damage from ultraviolet exposure, oxidation or other degradation. See what the cleaning stages actually do.

Is chemical recycling a solution for any mixed load?

No. Chemical processes have feedstock, contaminant and operating limits. Their outputs may require purification or upgrading before new polymer can be made. Compare routes and their boundaries.

Do pellets prove that a material came from the ocean?

No. Origin is supported by collection records and chain-of-custody evidence. Routine pellet tests generally cannot establish marine collection history. Testing and source verification answer different questions.

Is mass balance the same as physical segregation?

No. Mass balance allocates defined input attributes through a shared system under specified rules. Segregation keeps material streams physically separate. The claim should identify the model. Ask which allocation rules and verification arrangements apply.

Can marine-recycled plastic be used for food contact?

Only where the specific material, process and intended application meet applicable requirements. Marine origin, washing and a recycled-content claim do not establish food-contact suitability. Review application qualification and regulatory boundaries.

What should a buyer request before a trial?

Request an application-relevant specification, test methods, lot data, source definition, custody evidence, compliance information and a procedure for non-conforming material. Agree which properties are guaranteed and how the trial will be assessed.

Does Junglefeedcomt certify facilities or arrange collections?

No. Junglefeedcomt is an independent informational resource. It does not operate facilities, certify materials, accept waste or broker recycling services. Read our editorial scope.
